The Spinning Plates Instrument is an idiophone featuring 9 suspended plates that can rotate freely (x axis), modulating the tones produced when struck. The plates vary in size from 30 cm to 2.5 m long and hang on wire with a bearing and spindle. Each produces a unique set of tones/modulation respective of its dimensions.
As each Plate rotates it modulates the amplitude and pitch of the sound via reproduction of the Doppler effect much like a Leslie speaker. In this proto-type each plate must be spun and struck manually. Future revisions are set to include motorised beings and mechanical beaters controllable via midi.
This release demonstrates each of the 9 plates in series. They are the first batch of recordings taken from the MK1 instrument between January and March 2018 and underpin a forthcoming series of compositions for the instrument.

As a band, they were really doing something strange at the time by making music that sounded so resolutely like it came from the bedroom of a solo producer. "Vocals" are just snatches of floating sound, drums are often electronic... all the instruments sound electronic. They were clearly inspired by dub (who isn't) and started with stripped-down fragments, but then kept whittling down from there. Mood-wise they're bleak yet beautiful, like enjoying a solo walk in an industrial landscape. Jascha Narveson
