HIAX003 features 33mins of improvisations with the Mk2 “Plate Feedback System” in Cupar Grain Silo- Scotland. \
////////////
This feedback system (developed in 2018/19) consists of a 2m steel plate set into a deep hardwood block with mounted transistors and separate external amplification.
To play the system, the headstock of the guitar must connect with the plate. As the guitar is played the vibrations directly excite the strings and in turn are fed back through the amplifier into the plate. The system produces infinite sustain somewhat like an e-bow and physical/acoustic? distortion from the minute vibrations between the pate and the headstock. The tone and sustain are controlled via the pressure applied to the plate, and the EQ & volume of the guitar.
As the headstock is pressed and moved around the flexible plate, the output can vary between a gentle hum to an aggressive pattering machine gun type shake. Tightly controlled sustained tones are decorated with nuances from the two materials interacting, louder more loosely controlled tones can rapture out of control into shaking screams of feedback. Playing with this system, it seems that there are infinite tonal variations as the plate responds to the guitar and vice versa.
These two recordings were from a session (28/04/19) with the mk2 design at Cupar Grain Silo a 250ft reverberant chamber located in central Scotland.
